Test Engineering Manager

Our client is a global aerospace company that works within the commercial and defense industries to manufacture and overhaul aerospace structures, components and systems.


The Test Engineering Manager will lead a multi-disciplinary engineering team through the testing of complex products in the aerospace & defense industry, including production, qualification, and development test activities for major aerospace & defense customers. This position will play a key role in cultivating a highly accountable and performance-driven team that continuously delivers on customer and program commitments. 

  • Act as a champion and change agent in driving a proactive engineering culture focused on alignment, efficiency, and accountability.

  • Lead the test engineering team in overseeing fabrication, maintenance and configuration control of test equipment and data acquisition systems (DAQ).

  • Provide technical direction to the production equipment team responsible for automated acquisition and electronic storage of production test data.

  • Lead the engineering laboratory team responsible for timely execution of development and qualification testing in accordance with DO-160, MIL-STD-810, SAE standards, and specific customer requirements within schedule and budget constraints.

  • Implement high-quality technical reporting and an accurate scheduling process. Facilitate and lead the test engineering team’s communication and negotiation of cost, schedule, and technical budgets.

  • Develop and build a diverse and talented team to support the team’s success and ability to deliver on business and customer commitments. Build on the existing team’s skill set through training, experiential roles, and development plans.

  • Act as the primary interface with new product development engineering teams to review the generation of qualification test plans and reports, manufacture of test fixtures, purchase of new equipment, and design of custom test setups in preparation for product development and qualification testing.

  • Collaborate with Environmental Health and Safety Engineer to promote and ensure a safe work environment, including compliance with health, environmental, and safety regulations.

  • Primary interface with Operations team to implement continuous improvement efforts on production test equipment to minimize downtime and reduce overall costs of testing.

  • Work in close collaboration and partnership with partners in Design, Manufacturing Engineering, Quality, Manufacturing, Procurement, and Program Management.

  • Comply with all company policies and procedures with an emphasis on test safety.


  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Aerospace Engineering is required.

  • A minimum of five years of progressive experience in a test engineering or integration & test environment within aerospace manufacturing is required.

  • An understanding of the aircraft certification process requirements which encompass scheduling, certification, and testing of aircraft parts is required.

  • Two years of experience directly or indirectly leading a professional and multi-disciplinary engineering or manufacturing team delivering consistent and tangible results is highly preferred.

  • Proven ability to collaborate broadly across all levels of a highly matrixed organization to achieve results with cross-functional teams, including internal and external customers, peers, and executive leaders is required.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple test projects/programs simultaneously. Scheduling and delegating work packages and maintaining budgetary guidelines is required.

  • Knowledge of manufacturing test and safety policies and regulations is required.

KEY ACCOMPLISHMENTS (in the first 6 to 12 months in this position)

  • Develop a comprehensive knowledge and personally own all aspects of the Test Engineering organization and performance.  Establish strong leadership credibility, confidence, and rapport with the test engineering team, peers, leadership team and customers.

  • Develop and maintain the proper metrics, scheduling process and accountability framework to ensure the team’s ability to successfully understand and manage priorities, delivering on schedule commitments.

  • Improve the performance and capabilities of the team through thoughtful assessment of existing talent and tools.  Make recommendations regarding contract support resources and identify opportunities for direct hires.  Provide vision and direction to improve overall team performance and set the test engineering team up for sustained success and potential expansion.
